Wes King is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. His duties include the SHU Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and he oversees the administration and growth of the band program. His duties also include teaching a wide variety of classes in the SHU Music Department, including Music Theory, Conducting, Music History, and the clarinet studio. Mr. King has also helped oversee development of the music and music education curricula in the Music Department, along with co-authoring SHU's successful application for Music Education certification.
Before Siena Heights, Mr. King earned his Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Arkansas. He served as a graduate teaching assistant working with and the Razorback Marching Band, Hogwild Pep Band, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Campus Band, Concert Choir, and Jazz Ensemble. He also performed with the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and Jazz Ensemble throughout his time at Arkansas.
Mr. King attended Mississippi State University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's of Music Education. He was a member of the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Elva Kaye Lance for his entire undergraduate career. Additionally, he participated in the marching band, pep bands, jazz band, chamber ensembles, and performed with the Starkville-MSU Symphony. He was a founding member of the current MENC chapter at MSU, which participated in many volunteer music programs promoting diversity in the community and surrounding schools. During his studies at MSU, he was a consistent Dean's Scholar and received the Hal & Joyce Polk Music Scholarship from the MSU Department of Music.
After his studies at Mississippi State University, Mr. King served as director at Taylorsville High School in Taylorsville, MS. His duties included directing the entire band program from fifth grade beginning band to the high school marching and concert bands. During his time at Taylorsville, the band experienced both growth and success at various marching festivals. In April 2009, the band traveled to the Music in the Parks Concert Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, and received first place in their division. In April 2010, the Taylorsville Jazz Band was created and was met with much success in the community.
In addition to his duties at Siena Heights, Mr. King is also the current director of the Adrian City Band. The Adrian City Band is the second oldest, continuous community band in the history of the United States. The Adrian City Band has recently completed its 178th season. The City Band plays throughout the summer with weekly concerts at the Adrian Farmers Market. The Adrian City Band plays a variety of music and regularly draws large, devoted crowds each week.
Mr. King is an adjudicator for the Michigan Competing Band Association, member of the College Band Directors National Association, and also holds honorary membership in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. In addition to his musical affiliations, Mr. King is also a member of the National Association of Realtors.
Mr. King lives in Adrian with his beautiful wife, Maggie, and their lovely girls, Lily and Elsa (not for Frozen!) and their new little boy, Max.
